Journey by train or plane to Aviemore and the Cairngorms

Is the long drive from the south the only issue holding you back from a holiday in the Cairngorms national park? There are many exiting and interesting travel options, should you really want to avoid the long drive from the South.Aberdeen and Aviemore stations are both served by direct Anglo / Scottish train services.

Option 1 - by Rail

 

1. There is a 6 day weekly direct sleeper service operated by Scotrail from London Euston departing (around 2030) calling at intermediate stations via Watford, Birmingham, Crewe and Edinburgh, delivering you "bright and breezy" in Aberdeen (approx 60 miles) or Aviemore (approx 35 miles) for around (0800 hours) and a corresponding return evening service departing from Aberdeen (around 2200 hours) or Aviemore (around 2100 hours) arriving London Kings Cross (around 0800 hours).

2. There is also 6 days direct weekly service operated by GNER from London Kings Cross departing (around 12.00 hours) calling at intermediate stations via, Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh arriving Aviemore (around 2000 hours) And a corresponding return service departing from Aviemore (around 2100 hours) 0830 hours arriving London Kings Cross (around 1600 hours)

Low cost car hire is available at both Aberdeen or Aviemore (approx 60 minutes drive from Bluefolds, Glenlivet) further details of hire companies below.

To reduce the car journey further, it is practical to change trains at Aberdeen and travel through to Keith, where you can pick up your hire vehicle leaving a short pleasurable drive to Bluefolds, Glenlivet

Keith is the nearest railway station to Bluefolds, Glenlivet and is approx 30 miles.

 

Option 2 - by Plane

Aberdeen has an international airport taking regular service flights from most uk airports from

London, Manchester, Norwich, Cardiff to Leeds / Bradord, Humberside and East Midlands with (BAA CitiExpress)

Aberdeen airport is seven miles from the city centre on the A96 near Dyce.

Two bus companies operate between the airport and the city centre; First Aberdeen (+44 (0)1224 650 065) and Stagecoach Bluebird (+44 (0)1224 212 266).

The local train station at Dyce is a short taxi journey from the airport. It runs a service to the mainline station in Aberdeen and from there you can catch a train to other destinations across Scotland and the rest of Britain. Rainbow Airport Taxis (+44 (0)1224 725 500/878 787/ 494 949) operate a service from Aberdeen Airport, The approximate fare from airport to the city centre is £14. Wheelchair accessible cars, a meet-and-greet service and executive cars are also available, though need to be booked in advance. For passengers driving into central Aberdeen from the airport, using satellite navigation, the airport postcode  is AB21 7DU.

The Road to the Cairngorms

and Car Hire

Bluefold self catering cottages are situated about 1 mile from the B9009 Dufftown to Tomintoul Road. (See detailed map of the area below) From the A9 north take the A95 toward Keith, turn right onto to the B9008 at Bridge of Avon through Bridge End of Livet and turn left onto the B9009 towards Dufftown and finally after about 2 miles turn left at the Bluefolds sign. Drive for 1/2 mile and at junction carry on straight up the hill through the farm to the cottages.
