"The sunset, the interior and some of the wildlife on Rona"

The Isle of Rona

The wonderfull Island of Rona is uninhabited for Bill Cowie the caretaker/ manager who lives in Rona Lodge overlooking Big Harbour (Acarseid Mhor) - one of the most beautiful anchorages in Scotland visited by yachts and a few hardy canoeists. This is where the local boat 'MV Stardust' of Portree operated by Dan Corrigal will normally land you and your party after a passage of 1 hour north north east between Skye and Raasay and then on towards Rona with views all around. Rona looks hard, craggy and uninteresting from outside but once inside her charms are revealed; warmth, colour, contrasts, history, geology, wildlife and much, much more. The three newly rebuilt cottages at the former Mission House overlooking the beautiful tidal bay of Dry Harbour (Acarseid Thioram) are 1 ½ miles over a hill track from the pier at Big Harbour - a spectacular walk with the Cuillins at your back, Torridon to the North and Lewis and Harris far away across the Minch.

The History of the Isle of Rona

Everywhere there is evidence of the past when Rona supported several hundred people: they finally left in 1922 and some remain on Skye and Raasay as a witness to a fragile but strong people living from the land amongst the rock and from the sea. Their Church was the most spectacular cave, their homes remain, and the paths of the past from the Lighthouse to the Temple (graveyard) are yours to walk and to trace the steps of the Raasay postman who rowed from Raasay and walked the length of Rona and back. At 125 metres or 400 feet Rona's highest peak is far grander and wilder than it's height suggests, as is the view. The native woodland of birch, rowan, holly, aspen, juniper and willow is expanding in a dynamic and beautiful tapestry contrasting with the heather and the rock and creating a lasting opportunity to improve soils, increase biodiversity and offset carbon emissions elsewhere.

Your luggage and supplies travel by "4-wheel drive bike and trailer" so can you...if you enjoy bumping along with Bill! Inside, the cottages (STB 4 Star) are light, clean and cosy with central heating, open fires, showers, comfy beds, gas cookers, fridge-freezer, washing machine and dryer and sunsets to die for. Midges come and go so be prepared to take the sunset indoors on occasions. And the soft clean rain will take years off your skin. Rona lies in the Sound of Raasay between the Island of Skye and Scotland’s West Coast. Rona is reached by boat from Portree on Skye where a charter has been organised with local resident Mr Dan Corrigal. Portree is a scenic 5 hour drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh which involves crossing the renowned toll free Skye bridge. Alternatively, a daily bus service operated by Scottish Citylink can take you to Portree.

Marine animals around the Isle of Rona

Whales and pods of Minkie Whales up to 30 foot are often seen breaking the surface one after the other, Inshore, both grey and common seals are found frequenting the coastline and islands associated with South Rona.  Common porpoise can be seen at any time of the year, especially on calm days when several may be seen gently surfacing, showing small dark dorsal fins, pods of one to eight would be typical.  Minke whales are seen during late summer, and on calm days long brown backs with a relatively small dorsal fin can be seen breaking the surface.  Orcas or killer whales frequent the waters, with sightings in winter and spring, but more spasmodically throughout the remainder of the year.  Seen usually in pods of up to ten, and identified by large erect dorsal fins with variable areas of white on their black body.  Northern bottle nosed whales migrate south during late summer and have been seen close to the west coast of Rona.  Several species of dolphin have been reported, including, striped, common, bottlenosed and white beaked.  Basking sharks are becoming more common.  The boatman assists assist with sightings and identification. Otters frequent much of the shoreline. Otters use the two pools formed to provide water to the house at Big Harbour.
