Journey by train or plane to Dalwhinnie and the Cairngorms

 

Is the long drive from the south the only issue holding you back from a holiday in the Cairngorms region? There are many exiting and interesting travel options, should you really want to avoid the long drive from the South. Aviemore railway station is served by direct Anglo / Scottish train services.

 

Option 1 - by Rail

 

1. There is a 6 day weekly direct sleeper service operated by Scotrail from London Euston departing (around 2030) calling at intermediate stations via Watford, Birmingham, Crewe and Edinburgh, delivering you "bright and breezy" in Dalwhinnie for around (07.30 hours) and a corresponding return evening service departing from Dalwhinnie (around 2200 hours) arriving London Euston (around 0800 hours).

2. There is also 6 days direct weekly service operated by GNER from London Kings Cross departing (around 12.00 hours) calling at intermediate stations via, Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh arriving Dalwhinnie (around 2000 hours) And a corresponding return service departing from Dalwhinnie around 0915 hours arriving London Kings Cross (around 1600 hours)

Option 2 - by Plane

Inverness less than 60 minutes in the car has an international airport taking regular service flights from most uk airports including London Gatwick, London Heathrow, London Luton, Belfast City, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Southampton, Nottingham East Midlands, Edinburgh, Stornoway and Benbecula in the Western Isles, Kirkwall in Orkney and Sumburgh in Shetland.

 

The airport Tel: 01667 464000 is located 9 miles east of the City of Inverness just off the main A96 trunk road and its facilities include on site car hire, restaurant and bar, shop, and 650 pay car parking spaces.

Taxis are available at the airport and buses operate to and from the airport terminal to Inverness city centre and towns to the east

The Road to Dalwinie

and Car Hire

 

From Perth go north on the A9 past Dunkeld, Pitlochry, and Blair Atholl. Take the first turn left after Blair Atholl signed to Calvine and Kinloch Rannoch, 300m turn right and then sharp turn under railway bridge. 10 miles to T junction. Turn right, 3 miles to Kinloch Rannoch. Follow road through the village and along the north shore of Loch Rannoch then 9 miles along the loch side to Bridge of Ericht. 1 Km after Power station on right hand side turn right by white cottage. Go through locked weldmesh gate with sign to Talla Bheith Estate. Please phone estate office before arrival to get code to combination lock. After 3 miles then bear right near the dam at only junction on this road. Please drive slowly and enjoy the views. Keep going for another 7 miles, down gradient and lodge is on the left. Keeper, Richard MacGregor, lives in the cottage to the rear and will be there to show you around.
