Journey by plane, Ferry and train to Harris and Lewis

Is the long journey from the south the only issue holding you back from a holiday on Harris or Lewis?

There are many exiting and interesting travel options, should you really want to avoid the long drive from the South.

Option 1 - by Plane

By air

Inverness Airport takes regular service flights from London Gatwick with (BA CitiExpress), Glasgow and Edinburgh with (Loganair), Manchester and Norwich with (Eastern Airways). Also from London Luton with EasyJet who specialise in great value budget flights to Inverness

Stornoway Airport (serving Lewis and Harris)

From Inverness airport you can take flights daily to Stornoway (Lewis) with (Logonair Tel +44 (0) 1955 602294) and (Highland Airways Tel +44 (0) 1667 462664)

Stornoway airport also takes in regular service flights from, Glasgow (BA CitiExpress) and Edinburgh (Logonair and Bmi)Lewis airport is located approx 3 miles east of Stornoway town centre and is clearly sign posted from the A866. More information on www.hial.co.uk/stornoway-airport.html

Option 2 - by Rail

Raill

Inverness station is served by direct Anglo / Scottish train services.

1. There is a 6 day weekly direct sleeper service operated by Scotrail from London Euston departing (approx 2045 hours) calling at intermediate stations via Watford, Birmingham, Crewe and Edinburgh, delivering you "bright and breezy" in Inverness at (approx 0830 hours).

and a corresponding return service departing from Inverness (approx 2040 hours) arriving London Kings Cross (approx 0750 hours).

2. There is also a 6 day direct weekly service operated by GNER from London Kings Cross departing (approx 12.00 hours) calling at intermediate stations via, Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh arriving Inverness at (approx 2000 hours).

And a corresponding return service departing from Inverness (approx 0800 hours arriving London Kings Cross (approx 1600 hours).

Car and Ferry

Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries www.calmac.co.uk connect the Isles of Lewis and Harris daily to the UK mainland by passenger / car ferry from two locations.

1. From Uig (Skye)

Where you could enjoy the week before...or week after at...

During the summer months (March to October) there are return crossings 6 days a week (there are no Sunday crossings) with 2 return trips each Saturday. The crossing takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs just £45 each way for a car.“Advance booking is recommended".

There are 3 return crossings per week during the winter months. There are also 3 to 4 daily return ferries running between Berneray / North Uist and Leverburgh (but again not on Sundays) for anyone who wishes to journey through the Uists en route to Harris - at a cost of £24.30 each way per car. 2. From Ullapool (Wester Ross)

Where you could enjoy the week before...or after at...

The ferry service from Ullapool (Wester Ross) to Stornoway (Lewis) operates on a 6 days a week daily basis throughout the year and is run by Caledonian MacBrayne ferries.

From March 25th through to October 22nd there are 0715 and 1345 departures from Ullapool (Wester Ross) arriving Stornoway (Lewis) at 1000 and 1630 and return sailings departing from Stornoway (Lewis) at 1030 and 1715 arriving Ullapool (Wester Ross) at 1315 and 2000

Driving on Harris and Lewis

The roads on Lewis and Harris are a pleasure to drive on, wide and empty with fantastic views, Access Harris Cottage, Leverburgh from Stornoway (Airport or Ferry) by taking just one road the A859 after an easy 90 minutes of wonderful views of Sea, Lochs, Beaches and Landscapes (Approx 70 miles later) you will arrive at Harris Cottage, Leverburgh.

Or if you are arriving at Tarbert (Harris) on the car ferry from Uig (Skye) simply join the A859 at Tarbert and an easy 35 minutes and (Approx 25 miles later) you will arrive at Harris Cottage, Leverburgh
