Ullapool, Wester Ross and Ross-shire

Ullapool nestles on the shores of Loch Broom about 1 hour North of Loch Ness and Inverness airport. It is the perfect base to discover Ross-shire, Cromarty, Sutherland, The Black Isle and Inverness. Ullapool has many restaurants, pubs and souvenir/craft shops and bustles all day long in summertime with people arriving off the ferries. The town has a large variety of excellent restaurants including one of the worlds best seafood restaurant offering locally caught seafood as well as highland venison.

Ullapool has its own Junior Pipe Band which plays close to the pier every Thursday from mid June - mid September, where you can enjoy a display of pipes, drums and Highland Dancing.

The band is often invited to play at the numerous Highland Gatherings in the area, which attract a large number of visitors.

There is also a leisure centre with sports facilities and swimming pool, library, banks, grocery shop, butcher's shop, an award winning museum, chemist's (pharmacy/drug store), Safeway supermarket, post office and petrol stations. There is a Golf course - 9 holes split over the shores of Loch Broom and Ullapool River and Tennis courts too.

Riches beyond your wildest dreams

A picture tells a thousand words. Truth is, life is rich where the photographs are best. Ullapool and Wester Ross offer riches beyond your wildest dreams. Ullapool is a great centre for hill walking and it's an ideal base for touring the beautiful landscape of the north-west Highlands........we don’t know where to start...

Should we tell you about the more famous attractions of Wester Ross such as Inverewe gardens, and the Victorian Spa town of Strathpeffer, or about the scenery, the mountains, or maybe the golf-course or

the gardens. What about the traditional music, or the fishing, and the walking? Have you ever seen the sunsets, the wildlife, the birds, the history, genealogy. Or perhaps you prefer the sea, the sailing, a kayak trip, the beaches? Maybe you fancy the swimming pool, the sports centre, the cycling? Have you tasted the prawns, the mussels, the lobsters? Are you for a wee dram…?

Wester Ross and Ross-shire offer some of the finest scenery in Scotland

The Leckmelm Gardens

Just a 1/2 mile from your accommodation stand Leckmelm Gardens some 12 acres of gardens first laid out in the 1870's. Featuring some magnificent trees – including a fabulous spreading beech – and a magnificent variety of shrubs  Leckmelm is much smaller (and much more peaceful) than Inverewe gardens and well worth a visit.

Activities and things to do

Island hopping....you can take one of the ferries with Caledonian Macbrayne over to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, on Wednesdays and Fridays from June to August and join a coach tour at Stornoway taking you to the Callanish standing stones, Carloway Broch and Arnol Black House. You then get time in Stornoway and leave at 7pm and reach Ullapool at approximately 9.40pm. You can also take a boat trip to the enchanting Summer Isles and see seals and porpoises or marvel at the botanist's miracle of Hydroponics in Achiltibuie.

Mountain Biking Holidays

Ullapool is central to the "Old Northern Highland Drovers route", open all year round and suited to all types of Bikers and Wakers from day trippers to stopovers...the Old Drovers route runs from Oykel Bridge to Ullapool (20 miles) taking in the scenic Glen Achall...then onto the spectacular Falls of Glomach, the Coulin Pass and Arnisdale (Loch Hourn)...the route then continues onto Kinloch Hourn; Borgie Forest; Truderscraig; Ardross Forest, the Kyle of Durness and Cape Wrath...

This area is blessed with majestic mountains, some of the most beautiful unspoilt scenery in the world, undiscovered beaches, forests, hidden glens with stags grazing, waterfalls, bird sanctuaries to explore, breathtaking twisty single track roads, all caressed by the gulf stream which gives us tropical gardens and comparably mild weather.

If you have been here before, you will know what we are talking about... don’t just settle for these wonderful images, come and be very welcome.
