Escape to the Mountains of Northern Scotland to glimsp the Northern Lights

Mountain View Cottage. Amazing location within the Beinn Eighe nature reserve a Beautiful modern detached holiday home in prime location with spectacular views of two of Scotland's most spectacular mountains Slioch and Beinn Eighe.

The Beinn Eighe nature reserve is renowned for it's variety of wildlife, magnificent scenery and mountain trails. Offering an ideal base for touring the Northern Highlands and the chance to see the Northern Lights during the Autumn and Winter months along with stunning sunsets, views of Skye, Harris and Lewis. Pine Martins visit the house regularly (especially if you feed them) and Deer and Eagles are often seen too.

Just a short distance away is stunning Loch Maree and numerous sandy beaches and bays which are located around Kinlochewe, Melvaig and Gairloch.

Kinlochewe and Loch Maree

Kinlochewe lies at the head of Loch Maree in it's magnificent valley and serves as a junction between the main road North to Ullapool and that which heads West to Loch Torridon. Loch Maree was at one time known as Loch Ewe, hence the villages apparently confused name. Kinlochewe has a general store, The Kinlochewe Hotel serving excellent food & drink, 2 Cafes, Post Office (with internet cafe) and filling station. There are buses connecting the village with Gairloch, Lochcarron and the train station at Achnasheen, with a small number running through to Inverness. The village contains two churches, Kinlochewe Free Church, built in 1873, and the Church of Scotland.

The area's other attractions include: a swimming pool, whale-watching trips, salmon, sea trout, brown trout, pike and sea fishing, bird-watching, falconry courses, deer stalking and deer museum, guided walking, climbing and sea kayaking trips, pony trekking, golf course, boat trips to view Viking graves on Loch Maree, bike hire, Inverewe Garden (National Trust) and Attadale Gardens, guided hill walks and guided climbing and sea kayaking trips to name but a few.

The larger village of Gairloch, 15 miles away, has additional attractions and activities. The award winning Creel Restaurant and the Old Inn are highly recommended for eating out. There is river and loch angling, sea fishing, whale watching trips and other excursions with local wildlife experts. Gairloch has an idyllic shoreline, golf course and pony trekking in the wooded Flowerdale. Instruction in mountaineering, rock climbing, sailing and canoeing are available for the intrepid. Local cycle hire, slipways and Inverewe Gardens may add further dimensions to your holiday.

So come and enjoy the peace and tranquility of a holiday amid superb scenery on Scotland's magnificent West Coast. Breathe in the fresh sea air, explore the stunning countryside and allow the charm of this unique location to inspire you and restore your energy.

The Northern Lights

The advantage of this cottages remote location and the absence of street lamps presents regular sightings of the Northern lights "Aurora Borealis". With good timing you have a good chance of experiencing one of the world's most magnificent natural phenomena: the Northern Lights. The Northern night sky dancing with red, yellow, green, blue and violet streamers, arcs and rays. The best time to see the Northern lights is in the months of October, November, December and January between 10 pm and 3 am. If you don't see the Northern Lights, then at least you'll see the stars - many, many more than you'll see from anywhere less remote. The longer you look up, the more stars will appear!

Wester Ross and Ross-shire Wildlife

Apart from the beautiful surroundings and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. The Warm Gulf Stream waters make for a temperate climate which attracts plentiful wildlife, including seabirds, otters and whales which feast on the seasonal bounty of the sea. The loch is circled to the south by the dramatic Torridon Mountains including the 3300ft high Beinn Alligin and Slioch (3215ft), one of Scotland's finest mountains. Inverness is the nearest city to Big Sand and Gairloch and is approximately 90 minutes drive away. The village of Badachro on the shores of Gair Loch has a fine pub with a restaurant in which to dine and relax after a day in the hills.

However you want to relax and unwind, Big Sand has so much to offer.

Riches beyond your Wildest dreams

A picture tells a thousand words. Truth is, life is rich where the photographs are best. Ullapool and Wester Ross offer riches beyond your wildest dreams. Ullapool is a great centre for hill walking and it's an ideal base for touring the beautiful landscape of the north-west Highlands........we don’t know where to start...

Should we tell you about the more famous attractions of Wester Ross such as Inverewe gardens, and the Victorian Spa town of Strathpeffer, or about the scenery, the mountains, or maybe the golf-course or

the gardens. What about the traditional music, or the fishing, and the walking? Have you ever seen the sunsets, the wildlife, the birds, the history, genealogy. Or perhaps you prefer the sea, the sailing, a kayak trip, the beaches? Maybe you fancy the swimming pool, the sports centre, the cycling? Have you tasted the prawns, the mussels, the lobsters? Are you for a wee dram…?
