Journey by train, plane or Coach to Gairloch, Ross-shire

 

Is the long drive from the south the only issue holding you back from a holiday in Ross-shire?

There are many exiting and interesting travel options, should you really want to avoid the long drive from the South.

 

Option 1 - by Rail

 

The nearest Rail Station is Achnashellach (21 miles) with a very limited service However Inverness station is served by direct Anglo / Scottish train services, from here you can hire a car and reach dry Island in under 2 hours.

There is a 6 day weekly direct sleeper service operated by Scotrail from London Euston departing (approx 2030 hours) calling at intermediate stations via Watford, Birmingham, Crewe and Edinburgh, delivering you "bright and breezy" in Inverness at (approx 0830 hours).

And a corresponding return service departing from Inverness (approx 2040 hours) arriving London Kings Cross (approx 0750 hours).

ALSO

There is a 6 day direct weekly service operated by GNER from London Kings Cross departing (approx 12.00 hours) calling at intermediate stations via, Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh arriving Inverness at (approx 2000 hours).

And a corresponding return service departing from Inverness (approx 0755 hours) arriving London Kings Cross (approx 1600 hours).

 

 

Option 2 - by Plane

 

Inverness also has an International airport taking regular service flights from

London Gatwick with (BA CitiExpress), Glasgow and Edinburgh with (Loganair), Manchester and Norwich with (Eastern Airways).

Also from London Luton with EasyJet who specialise in great value budget flights to Inverness airport.

From here you can hire a car and reach Gairloch in under 2 hours.

 

 

By Car

 

The roads in Ross-shire are a pleasure to drive on, wide and empty with fantastic views. 1 From Inverness take the A9 north over the Kessock Bridge (signs for Thurso) 2 At the first roundabout (Tore) follow the signs for Ullapool & Dingwall A835 (2nd exit) 3 At the second roundabout (Maryburgh) follow the signs for Ullapool A835 (2nd exit) 4 Just after Garve turn left onto the A832 Gairloch & Kyle of Lochalsh5 At the Achnasheen roundabout bear right (2nd exit) to Kinlochewe & Gairloch A832
6 At Kinlochewe go straight ahead for Gairloch A832 7 At Gairloch turn left onto the B8021 to Big Sand, North Erradale and Melvaig
