The Deveron Valley & Fishing
The salmon rich River Deveron and it's beautifully scenic valley, less illustrious than it North East neighbours the Dee and Spey, is North East Scotlands best kept secret.
However keen anglers return year after year, generation after generation. The River Deveron rises in the high hills above the Cabrach along with its main tributaries the Blackwater and the Bogie. The peaty water flows over a bottom of shingle and rock and is fast flowing in its upper reaches. Joined by the River Isla it slackens its pace as it meanders through the fertile countryside until its 60 mile journey ends in the sea at Banff. There are superb glides in its middle to lower reaches and due to the rocky bottom it has plenty of white water and can fish well in low water. It is prone to flash flooding and the water runs black but fines down to that golden brown colour which fly anglers love.
Salmon is present from early February. During April and May the brown trout fishing is superb. Then towards the end of May until July Sea Trout up to7 lb! join the river.

To the North lies Aberdeenshire and some of the most wonderful rural scenery to offer for you and your family including pretty coastal villages like Gardenstown, Cullen, Findochty, Portsoy and Banff. Stunning beaches all along the Moray Firth coast including Findhorn, Roseisle and Hopeman.
The Moray Firth coast is also haven for wildlife, and you can often see dolphins, seals, otters, whales and falcons throughout the year. Roughly one half of its border consists of amazing coastline ranging from the awesomely rugged to the most wonderfully beautiful. The sunsets on the Moray coastline in themselves are renowned for their beauty as many a visitor will testify, its Northerley latitude and position making it a good place to even see the mysterious "Aurora Borealis" Northern lights.

Locality of Huntly, Dufftown and Tomintoul
Huntly the most local town, has a beautiful Castle as well as supermarkets, Shops, restaurants and gift shops. Huntly formerly known as Milton of Strathbogie is well known for Huntly Castle a beautiful castle overlooking The Gordon Schools. It also is the home of the famous Deans bakers which produce world-famous shortbread biscuits. There is salmon and trout fishing on the Rivers Deveron and Bogie, which are administered by the River Deveron Salmon Fisheries Board
To the West is Dufftown heart of the Whisky trail and also the highest village in the highlands "Tomintoul" these attractive places have a selection of food and gift shops one with a great selection of scottish gifts. On the way to Dufftown is the excellent 18 hole Golf course. Dufftown also has an excellent butcher, baker and a well known kilt maker.
Tomintoul the highest village in the highlands has a selection of food and gift shops including with a great selection of Scottish gifts. The Croft Inn pub, with excellent beer is about 2 miles from the cottages.
Skiing holidays in Scotland
Within and easy 60 minute drive from you will find the Lecht ski resort www.lecht.co.uk Tel (01975) 651440. This fantastic activity centre is best suited to beginners and intermediates, featuring an exellent Dry Ski slope. The longest natural run being 900m, there is also a network of short lifts on both sides of the A939 Cockbridge–Tomintoul road. Straddling the A939 on the famous Cockbridge to Tomintoul road, the Lecht 2090 sits feet above sea level amid the beauty of the Eastern Cairngorms. This natural playground offers exciting outdoor activities throughout the year from Deval Karts / ride (incl. Uplift), Quad Bikes / session, Fun Karts / session, Kiddie Karts / session, Chairlift / return ride, Summer Ski or Board.

Wildlife and Nature
The Deveron valley is a fantastic area for viewing birds, wildlife and wild flowers. After you have enjoyed the resident rabbits, sheep, buzzards and deer,
you can explore further within this area and see Stags, Rut and Mountain Hare. With winter good timing Stoat visitors including Fieldfare, Redwing, Snow Bunting, Waxwing and Brambling. Many birds including Flocks Pink Footed Goose, Whitefronted Goose, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose visit the Cairngorms every year. Also Badgers, Red Squirrel, Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, and Long Eared Owl, Pipstrelle, Long Eared Bats.

The Moray Whisky Trail and the Highland Games
Dufftown is famous for 2 annual Whisky Festivals in May and September
Dufftown is at the very heart of the Malt Whisky Trail. Whisky nosing and tasting sessions can be arranged all year at the Dufftown Whisky Shop. A chance to sample 6 different whiskies and to learn what makes them so different. The Whisky Festivals in 2006 are: the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival from Friday 28 April - Monday 1 May and Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival 22 -25 September.
From May to September each year, there are whisky nosings on Tuesday evenings and Ceilidhs on Thursday evenings. The Glenfiddich distillery is open to the public (free) while close by is the picturesque ruined Balvenie Castle with it’s renaissance facade maintained by Historic Scotland. Other local distilleries to visit and whiskies to taste include Macallan, Glen Grant, Glenfarclas, the Glenlivet (free tours), Aberlour and Cardhu.
Each year the village of Braemar, Scotland invites people from all over the world to attend the Braemar Gathering and Highland Games. The Gathering is always held on the first Saturday in September and it is perhaps the most famous and finest Highland Games anywhere. It features the finest Pipe Bands, pipers, Highland dancers, and athletes in a beautiful setting surrounded by hills. The patron of the Gathering is Her Majesty the Queen

Local outdoor activities include Nordic Skiing in Clashindarroch Forest, mountain biking. The local football team is Huntly F.C. Nearby is the start point of Scotland's longest horse ride trail, Highland Horseback, running 200 miles to the West Coast.

In this area there are literally dozens of Castles to visit from Ballindalloch Castle near Aberlour on the river Spey to Balmoral a beautiful drive over the mountains to Royal Deeside where you are spoilt for choice with Drum, Crathes, Craigevar or castle Fraser. Between Forres and Nairn is Brodie and Cawdor Castles and to the east of Dufftown is the ruined Huntly castle and close to Turiff is Fyvie castle above with its 5 towers and 5 centuries of history, further a field castles such Balmoral, Braemar, Crathes and castle Urquhart on Loch Ness or cities such as Aberdeen, Elgin, Forres and Inverness are easily accessable.

This is a unique little cottage - known as a bothy - where the farm workers used to live in days gone by. It is unique because it has been converted into a perfect holiday home ideal for 2 people. Everything in it had to be well planned, transforming it into a very comfortable cottage.
The bothy has One bedroom with twin beds, a Bathroom with walk-in shower, and open plan kitchen / diner with Gas hob/oven, fridge, toaster, microwave oven, washing machine/dryer facilities on site. All cooking equipment including utensils cutlery, crockery, mugs, pots, Coffee cafeteir, toaster, cork screw are provided for your convenience. A Log burner is provided in the lounge for cosy nights in
Outside there is a walled garden patio with garden furniture, and beautiful views overlooking the River Deveron

Auchingoul Cottage was converted in 2002. Originally the old farm workers' cottage, it is now a luxury fully equipped holiday cottage with everything you need in it.
Downstairs it has an open plan kitchen / diner with Gas hob / oven, fridge, toaster, microwave oven, washing machine/dryer facilities on site. All cooking equipment including utensils cutlery, crockery, mugs, pots, Coffee cafeteir, toaster, cork screw are provided for your convenience.
One twin bedroom with ample hanging and drawer space. The Bathroom has a shower, WC and wash basin and is accessed from the hallway.
Upstairs there is an open balcony with hi-fi where you can sit and relax and also the Master double bedroom overlooking your own courtyard with garden furniture and barbecue.

Swallow Cottage was converted in 2010 and is now a luxury fully equipped holiday cottage with everything you need in it. Downstairs open plan sitting room / kitchen. The kitchen has a Gas hob / oven, fridge, toaster, microwave oven and washing machine / dryer facilities on site. All cooking equipment including utensils cutlery, crockery, mugs, pots, Coffee cafetiere, toaster, cork screw are provided for your convenience. The downstairs Bathroom has walk in shower, WC and wash basin.
Upstairs there is one Double bedroom overlooking the River Deveron, one Twin Bedroom, spacious landing area with WC with full central heating and wood effect stove.

Accommodation: The Log cabin comfortably sleeps 6 and has 1 Double Bedroom and 1 Twin Bedroom upstairs and 1 Master Double Bedroom downstairs. All bedrooms have ample hanging and drawer space.

We have had a super holiday here. The sheep and birds make lovely neighbours. We greatly enjoyed our walks in the purple heather, our dog, Meg, does not want to go home to St Albans after her trips up the hills, in the river and on the beaches. The cottage is remarkably well set-up and very comfortable indeed. Golf at Dufftown - no 10 is awesome and the falconry centre was amazing. Having a Harris Hawk sit on your head is an experience.
