Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

In the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park the best known and beautiful expanse of water is Loch Lomond. The southern end of the loch is surrounded by fairly gentle rolling hills. As you travel northwards, you cross the highland fault line which signals a change in the rock types an hence the scenery. Further to the north west you find the long sealochs and freshwater lochs and the rugged mountains more typical of the northern highlands. Loch awe and Loch Long with Arrochar and the fabulous “Arrochar Alps” being typical examples.

Access to the Island and Parking

Access to Inchmurrin Island is convenient, simple, secure, worry free and most importantly available from the owners with complimentary secure car parking (from Midross in Arden)

Arrival and departure journeys from the Island are fully inclusive of the hire charge. Guests also have additional journey / un-restricted ferry access on demand at anytime on and off the Island for just £5 per person (£2.50 under 12’s) return.

Guests who have their own boats can launch and park securely at the Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway at Balloch Pier. Boat registration can also be done here or by post prior to arrival.

Across to the east you find the beautiful centre of the Trossachs with a variety of lochs, each with its own unique attractions. In the north east you come to Balquhidder, the home of Rob Roy MacGregor and finally to the north, the lands of the Campbells, MacNabs, and Stewarts by Lochs Earn, Dochart and Tay. Loch Lomond stretches from its gentle southern end at Balloch to Ardlui, some twenty-one miles to the northwest. Loch Lomond, made famous by the song “the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond ” is one of the main attractions of the national park although you must leave time to explore the rest of the park. Loch Lomond is the largest inland expanse of water in Britain for boating. It has the advantage of being large and the safety of being enclosed, but without the disadvantages of tides, large swells and navigational problems. It provides areas sheltered enough for ski-ing but open enough for sailing. The southern end of the Loch has many islands to explore and plenty of sheltered anchorages. The north end of the Loch, in contrast, provides long stretches of deep, open water.

Mountain bikes, Walking, Canoes and Water skiing

The Loch is suitable for any vessel including canoes, kayaks, dinghies, speed-boats, cruisers and yachts. A public launching facility and trailer park is available for all sizes of boats at the Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway, Balloch (01389 757295). There is also a picnic site and public launching for smaller boats at Milarrochy Bay, East Loch Lomond (01360 870412)

Boating, Mooring and Fishing on Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s best Lochs for salmon, sea trout and coarse fishing (especially pike). Salmon and pike of thirty pounds and sea trout of ten pounds are caught most years. With the introduction in recent years of the live bait “ruffe” the balance has changed with increasing numbers of pike and decreasing numbers of salmon and trout. The season for salmon and sea trout is 11th Feb to 31st Oct, fishing by fly or trolling with large bait for salmon and smaller bait for sea trout. The record salmon is 44lbs 8oz. The record sea trout is 22lbs 8oz.

There is no close season for coarse fishing. Trolling from a moving boat is not allowed when coarse fishing. The record pike is 47lbs 11oz.

Day and weekly game and coarse fishing angling permits can be purchased from Balmaha boat yard, tourist information centres, local hotels etc. The Angling map of Loch Lomond and season permits for game and coarse fishing can be purchased from the Secretaries of the Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association, 379 Hamilton Rd., G71 7SG Tel: 0141 781 1545.

Dinghies with engines and rods can be hired from Balmaha boat yard Pike and salmon boat trips can be arranged with Loch Lomond Fishing or premier leisure.

Boat storage and moorings are available on Inchmurrin Island, competitively priced storage facilities for your boat throughout the winter. Inside storage (Including slippage & Summer trailer storage) £15.00 per foot over Winter Outside Storage (Including slippage & Summer trailer storage) £8.00 per foot over Winter. £15.00 per foot over Summer.
